Resolutions or Goals?

Did you have a New Years resolution? Are you still sticking with it? Did you know that most people give up on their resolutions by January 14th? As someone who coaches people how to achieve success through effective goal planning, the word “resolution” is like hearing nails on a chalkboard. It’s not because I don’t want to see people better themselves, but because I don’t like seeing people set themselves up for failure.

The difference between resolutions and goals is that resolutions are typically not well thought out. They are typically said more closely related to wishes and dreams than they are goals. Goals require planning and preparation. For example, which phrase sounds more effective?

“I want to drink more water in 2020.”

Or

“Starting January 1, 2020 I will fill up my 12oz reusable bottle with tap water three times a day (8am, 12pm. 4pm), seven days a week in order to to drink my goal of 36oz of water every day.”

I’m sure we can agree that the second sentence will lead to a better chance of success. Well-planned goals are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound, also known as SMART goals. The more details you give, the less room there is for failure….as long as you follow through with your plan.

This month, I challenge you to set one goal using the SMART goal format and then stick with it. You will be amazed at your success! You can even share with me how it went on social media! Find me on Facebook and Instagram at @imthegoalgetter.
